We've all heard the tales of our cancer-causing cooking boxes we keep in the kitchen, but they really aren't dangerous to be around when they're running.
Craig Benzine from the Mental Floss YouTube channel takes a look at the classic myth in this video. While it's true that microwave ovens use microwave radiation to cook your food, there's no evidence that any dangerous levels of radiation escape. See that layer of mesh on the glass? That keeps the microwaves from escaping. It's still not recommended to stare into the microwave while it's working its magic, but the FDA regulates all microwave ovens sold in the US to ensure their safety. When it comes to what should or shouldn't be microwaved, however, that's a completely different story.
