CNET: Woz: Microsoft might have reincarnated Steve Jobs

Today's philosophical discussion is on the subject of beauty and reincarnation. Specifically, beauty as it is beheld by those who adore their smartphones and reincarnation as it involves Steve Jobs.

Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, has pronounced that Android's operating system is uglier than Shrek from behind.

No, he didn't quite say that. However, The Verge tells me that Woz declared in an interview with Dan Patterson and the co-author of his autobiography, Gina Smith, that Windows Phone is like being "with a friend, not a tool."

Some of my tools can be remarkable friends at times - and vice versa. However, what Woz appears to be getting at is that he finds Windows Phone's interface to offer considerable aesthetic pleasure. And he believes that someone hired away from Apple must have been a part of this design...

CNBC: Google launches storage service for personal files

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Google is hoping to build the world's largest digital filing cabinet in the latest attempt to deepen people's dependence on its services.

The Internet search leader began its pursuit of the audacious goal Tuesday with the much-anticipated debut of Google Drive, a product that stores personal documents, photos, videos and a wide range of other digital content on Google's computers.

By keeping files in massive data centers, users will be able to call up the information on their smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and just about any other Internet-connected device. Content can also be more easily shared among friends, family and co-workers by sending links to the information instead of emailing large attachments.

Google Drive is offering the first five gigabytes of storage for free. Monthly prices for additional storage will range from $2.49 for 25 gigabytes to $49.99 for one terabyte, equivalent to five laptops with 200-gigabyte drives.

The service is initially available through a Web-based interface or as a software installation on Windows-based computers, Mac computers, laptops running on Google's Chrome operating system and smartphones powered by Google's Android software. A version compatible with Apple Inc."s hot-selling iPhone and iPad is due in the next few weeks.

It may be several weeks before Google Drive is available throughout the world. Many Google users were simply told Tuesday to check back and request to be notified.

Offering online storage is part of a technological shift away from storing personal files on a single machine in a home or office. Users instead are entrusting data to computing hubs accessible just about any time at any place with Internet access. The concept has become popularly known as "cloud computing."

For all its technological know-how, Google is a late arrival in what is shaping into the Internet's version of storage wars. Other combatants with a head start include two other technology heavyweights, Apple and Microsoft Corp., and pioneering startups such as Dropbox Inc. and Box Inc...

FOX News: Google Introduces Google Drive With 5GB Free Online Storage

The online file storage and collaboration sphere just got another major player.

Google (GOOG) on Tuesday announced its long-rumored Google Drive, providing users with five gigabytes of free storage online as well as collaboration tools for items stored in it.

"Today, we're introducing Google Drive - a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff... You can upload and access all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond," Google wrote in a blog post...

MSNBC: Japanese teen traced as owner of tsunami soccer ball found in Alaska

A Japanese teenager has identified himself as the owner of a soccer ball that washed up on an Alaska beach last week - the first traceable debris to arrive in the United States from last year's tsunami.

Misaki Murakami, who comes from the city of Rikuzentakata - where more than 3,000 homes were destroyed, came forward on Sunday after reading news reports about the find.

Marker pen writing on the soccer ball identified the 16-year-old and the name of his school.

The soccer ball and a volleyball were discovered by David Baxter, about a technician working at a radar station on remote Middleton Island, in the Gulf of Alaska, Doug Helton of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote in blog post last week.

Japan's Kyodo news agency said Murakami had been at home at the time of the tsunami disaster in March 2011 but managed to escape the waves by running to higher ground with his pet dog...

ABC News: Small Business Strategies: Lessons from Instagram's Success

A billion dollars - that's billion with a "b" - to purchase a company with only 13 employees and absolutely no income.

That's how much Facebook paid to acquire Instagram, a mobile, social photo application. That may sound outrageous, but c'mon, wouldn't you like to know how you can grow your startup company to be the next Instagram?

I live in Silicon Valley, where entrepreneurs' dreams of selling a startup business for millions are more common than visions of winning the lottery and with better odds. After all, just a few years ago, Kevin Systrom, Instagram's co-founder and chief executive who is now worth $400 million, was a barrista at the coffee house I frequent in Palo Alto, Calif.

I'm certain he made me a cappuccino more than once. Remember me, Kevin? Can I get my tips back?

Many of today's millionaires made their fortune by being part of a startup, but going from new, scrappy, small business to multi-million-dollar acquisition is still a long, long shot.

Daily Mail - UK: Google unveils wearable techno-glasses which layer Maps, email and web searches OVER your view of the world

Google has taken the wraps off techno-glasses which add emails, Google searches and even directions over your view of the world.

The glasses - unveiled via a Google Plus page, Project Glass, are voice-controlled, and offer GPS directions as well as email and video chat through a built-in screen directly in front of a user's eyes.

The glasses are a product of Google's 'Google X' blue-sky ideas lab - and the search giant is looking for ideas to improve them.

Scroll down for video

'We think technology should work for you - to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don't,' says Google.

The glasses appear to run a variant of the Android operating system, using the same microphone icon and other recognisable parts of Google's mobile OS. ...
